Why is a “rear projection” lcd cheaper than just a lcd flat screen?
I am shopping for a flat screen tv and have decided finally to go with a lcd tv only to find out that there are actually two lcd tvs. One with rear projection and one without rear projection and the one with rear projection is cheaper. Why?

The LCD panel of the RPTV is much, much smaller than panel of the direct-view TV. (The RPTV uses lenses to enlarge the image.) It’s more difficult and expensive to manufacture a big LCD than a small one.
because lcd is using pixles rear projection uses a bulb if u notice when you look at a projection look up and down and side to side you will see darkness when look at lcd you wont see as much with plasma you dont see any at all
Its the ability to get that amazing picture in about 4-5″ inches is what cost the most.
If you dont have a space requirement and dont plan on hanging it on a wall then the rear projections units are a very good value. But you will have to replace the bulb in the unit every 2-3 years. But with LCD units the picture never degrades over time like the old tvs. Just pop a new bulb and your good to go.
Sony make the most reliable units out there, you pay a bit more for them but its worth it.
