what is the difference between 1080i and 1080p?

I have a 60” philips tv that is hd
it has an hdmi input in the back, when I compare it to a plasma the picture on the plasma is so much better. I think it’s a projection.
And what is the difference between component and hdmi

    HDMI cables are the best way you can input video into a HDTV.

    1080p is the same resolution as 1080i, except 1080p uses progressive scan to make things seem less blurry.
