My 36″ non projection TV’s screen got scratched during a move, is it possible to polish the glass?

The scratches are pretty shallow, and I was wondering if you could maybe fill them or use the same techniques used in eyeglass & windshield repair.

What test equipment is needed to repair projection and LCD tv’s?

I was in the TV repair business for many years, many years ago. It became hard to make a living because at that time you could replace a TV nearly as cheap as repairing but With the cost of the new LCD’s & Plasmas I’m thinking it may be a good time to jump back into the business and was wondering what test equipment I would need to service these units.

Projection TV’s are a scam and Parts replacements are a ripoff. Agree?

Convergence boards and lamps always break and need replacing but the real problem is price of those components. They intentionally want you to buy from one manufacturer at hyper inflated prices. Most people are dumping their projection TV’s that may have a glitch then fix them.

Biggest scam.
Convergence boards and lamps always break and need replacing but the real problem is price of those components. They intentionally want you to buy from one manufacturer at hyper inflated prices. It’s kind of what the razor blade companies do. It’s called lock-in. Most of these parts are built so they fit only ‘their’ brand. Therefore the high prices – ZERO COMPETITION in parts. Most people are dumping their projection TV’s that may have a glitch then fix them.

Why do rear projection TV’s turn the lamps off after the picture making electronics?

I have two DLP TV’s both leave the lamp on for about 5 seconds after the picture is turned off. Surely the DLP chip could survive being turned off after the major heat source is.
Additional, The fan works for about five minutes after the bulb is turned off, surely the bulb would cool down quicker if it was unlit?

Has anyone had to replace their HD LCD Projection TV’s Lamp yet?

My 19 month old Sony HD TV is getting dark. The owner/s manual says it has a limited life. Their tech guy said the life is 4,000 to 6,000 hours. That’s like $10.00 month!!

Don’t laugh-I still have rabbit ears on my TVs. Don’t plan on getting cable. Which TV converter Box is best

Can’t afford $40.00 per month for digital TV, cable, Satellite, etc. right now. One of my TVs doesn’t even have a remote – I actually have to get up, go over and turn the knob to change channels.
But I do have a nice, 18 year old, 45″ Panasonic CinemaVision color video projection system TV. Still works great. Wondering which converter box to use my government issued coupon to purchase. There are over 34 different brands of converter boxes listed. I’m afraid I’ll get to the store and an uninformed teenager will just sell me anything they have. Of course, I want the one that will give me the best reception. The dtv2009 website was no help in this. Any ideas?

Also, When I finally get my converter box, will it convert to digital immediately? Or will I have to wait until Feb. 17, 2009? again, the dtv2009 website was no help with this question either.

Direct TV and your Tv’s Resolution Quality

To understand the significance of resolution in Direct TV, let’s begin with the television we know – the traditional, NTSC-analog TV. It will help to take a closer look at how the images we see on the TV screen are formed.

In pictures made on film – ‘movie-pictures’ – images are projected on to the screen as a complete picture, in a single action. Creating video or television pictures is quite different.

The pictures and completed images we see on a traditional CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TV screen, are really a series of horizontal and vertical lines; (visualize Horizontal Rows and Vertical Columns) with these ‘rows’ and ‘columns’ consisting of “tiny” dots or dashes.

The ‘rows’ are commonly called “Scan Lines” since they are applied to the screen as the ‘electron gun’ scans from left to right, and top to bottom. (This application of scan lines is sometimes described as ‘painting’ or ‘drawing’ the scan lines)

The ‘electron gun,’ located at the rear of the picture tube, is basically a wire filament that becomes heated due to resistance as electric current is applied. The heating action causes electrons to collect around the filament. By applying a high, positive voltage, the negatively charged electrons are accelerated away from the filament, and towards the phosphor-coated, interior surface of the picture tube. The accelerating electrons are concentrated in a narrow beam which strikes the coated surface of the picture tube, causing the phosphor to glow in that focused area..

Where a picture’s scene is darker, the electron beam is ‘weaker’ – or less intense – and the phosphor ‘glow’ is less. Where a scene in the picture is brighter, the electron beam is more intense, and the phosphor ‘glow’ is brighter. The electron beam scans across the surface of the picture tube, in direct coordination with how the original scene was scanned by the sensor in the television camera. As the scan lines vary – changing from bright, to dark, with many intensities in between – images are formed on the TV screen.

As stated above, the “resolution” of a TV is how well it is able to distinguish between the alternating light and dark lines, when these are spaced close together. If the lines are too close together (exceeding the resolution limits) they will appear merged – being neither dark, nor light, but blurred into ‘muddy’ shades of gray.

A Direct TV that is able to “DISPLAY” TV signals in HDTV-Resolution – 720p – 1080i or 1080p – is “HDTV-Capable.” A Digital TV that is HDTV-Capable – AND – has an ‘Internal’ HDTV Receiver is called an “Integrated” HDTV. A Digital TV that can display HDTV-Resolution Pictures, but requires an ‘External’ HDTV Receiver is commonly referred to as an HDTV-Capable ‘Monitor’.

480i – The picture is 704×480 – (60/2 interlaced frames per second) = 30 complete frames per second.

480p – The picture is 704×480 – 60 complete frames per second.

720p – The picture is 1280×720 – 60 complete frames per second.

1080i – The picture is 1920×1080 – (60/2 interlaced frames per second) = 30 complete frames per second.

1080p – The picture is 1920×1080 – 60 complete frames per second.
