Should i get an HD projector or an LCD HDTV?
i was looking at an HD projector that costs 900-1000 but was wondering if it would be better or equal to an LCD HDTV of a similar price. i will be using it for watching TV and movies. i will have it in a somewhat dark room and use a grey projector screen. unless a white screen would be better. would i be better off getting a 50″ lcd tv or would the 100″ projector screen make it worth it? here’s some info on the projector:
The Optima HD20 operates at a native 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), while it also is compatible with most computer formats, such as UXGA, WXGA, SXGA+, SXGA, XGA, SVGA, VGA resized, VESA, PC and Macintosh It can also accept common global video inputs and video formats up to 1080p (HDTV, EDTV, SDTV, NTSC, PAL, SECAM). Like all Optoma projectors, the DLP engine operates without filters, keeping ownership and maintenance costs low while ensuring consistent performance throughout the projector’s life. The projection lamp is rated to last up to 4000 hours in standard mode or 3000 hours in bright mode. The HD20 also incorporates a rapid shutdown feature that further reduces ownership costs, and it comes with a one-year parts and labor warranty, with the lamp being covered for 90 days.

If you want the highest quality picture for $900-1000, I’d go with an LCD. If you want a projector with a really good picture, you have to spend alot more money than that.
I have a question up asking which would be the best model between these first three:

so if you want to keep an eye on my answer, that’s here:

As for LCD or Projection, all the research I’ve done indicates a clear slam-dunk for the projector as long as a) you can make the room really dark and b) clear and straight line of sight to the destination (wall or screen), and c) potential wiring difficulties are factored in. There is a cost of ownership due to the bulbs, but when you look at the initial cost and depreciation of an LCD/Plasma (plus factoring in their luminescence half-lives), I just don’t think the two are comparable any more.
If you’re going to be in a rather dark room I suggest going with the projector. But also remember a HD projector cost a lot more then a LCD tv. To tell you the truth you could probably get a 65″ LCD tv for cheaper. If you do go with a projector stick with a DLP over a LED. DLP has been prove to be more crisp and more appealing to the human eye. I currently have a 52″ LCD Sharp TV and for my video company we own a Panasonic 3200 lumes DLP projector for doing presentations. We project on a 10X7 screen at 4:3.
You are better off buying a 1080P Plasma tv from Panasonic. A 65″ Plasma at Costco is now $2,000. It will last longer and brighter than any DLP projectors. Pick up a copy of Home Theater Magazine March issue, it list just about every projectors in the market. Entry level projector from Epson will cost you $2,295. I use a Panasonic projector for my Home Theater and had to purchase it directly from Panasonic for $3,495. This is only used for watching blu ray disc movies at night. Projectors you see at retail store are low end projector and will not last long or bright enough. Hope this will help you out.
