Should I buy a plasma, LCD..or stick with what I have?
Ok hear is the deal… About 8 months ago I bought a 50″ samsung lcd 720p. The 1080p was still a little pricy so I bought 720. About a month ago I found a 55″ Sony KDS55″A2020 SXRD (rear projection) for sale on craigslist for 500.00…so I jumped right on it cause this tv had great reviews when it came out and it was also a 1080p…which is what I really wanted…when i brought it home, I plugged in my xbox360 into the Sony and the picture was great…then I plugged it into the samsung again..LCD and the picture is so much more brighter….so now I dont know what the game was supposed to look like…lol.
Anyways..for anyone who has both a DLP, SXRD…and then a plasma or lcd 1080P….
My question is…will there be a BIG difference if I sold my SONY 1080p rear projection and bought a 1080p plasma or LCD?
I want to make sure there wont be a big change…befor I go out and buy a blueray.
Thanks in advance.

You must have some money burning a hole in your pocket! lol.
You bought a 50″ Samsung LCD 8 mths ago which probably cost an easy $1,200 or so. Then you go out an buy a $500 rear projection TV and now you’re looking to buy a Blu-ray? Possibly another LCD or Plasma…why exactly? A Blu-ray should look great on either the Sony or the Samsung you already have!
If you’re worried about the whole 720p, 1080p thing…that only matters depending on your seating distance and screen size.
The correct seating distance for your Samsung 50″ 720p TV is between 8ft to 14ft(the closer to 8ft you are the better). The correct distance for your Sony 55″ 1080p TV is between 7ft to 10ft(the closer to 7ft the better)!

However…just FYI…rear projection or DLP TV’s tend to have high maintenence costs! They need new lamps every couple hundred hours that cost a few hundred bucks! Plus they have high failure rates with their color wheels and light engines…which are very expensive repairs!
If i was you, i’d get rid of the Sony and get yourself a new Panasonic Plasma TV! Plasma TV’s have the highest contrast ratios and fastest response time(.001ms) and fastest refresh rates(600hz)! Making them the best with fast motion content like sports, movies and gaming! Perfect for Blu-ray! I mentioned Panasonic because they are the most reliable brand that i’ve ever seen!
Hope this helps!
I would go for LCD, because even the newest plasma still might had image burn in issue and the annoying buzz sound.
You probably would find some on sales, samsung lcd no doubt the best picture for a lcd. As far as value i would pick sony lcd. They low entry line offer excellent feature for its price.
Biggest different of rear projection to a plasma or lcd. Is the view angle. Plasma are better tv in view angle than other tv.
Also depend where you live, if you like denver or high attituide area avoid plasma.
What i herad next year 3d (wear glasses)ready tv will be coming out, that is more likely a future technology might goes to mainstream.
“will there be a BIG difference” – technically, I’d have to say yes. But realistically, only you can decide. A modern Plasma would outshine the TVs you currently have from a technical stand point. But from a consumer standpoint, everyone is different. So the advantages you’d get from a 50″+ Plasma may or may not be a “BIG difference” for you. It might be unnoticeable, it might be a smaller difference, or it might be a big difference. Everyone’s sensitivities are different.
A G or V series Plasma from Panasonic would give you the best possible image in the market place right now. That should technically provide a noticeable difference over the Sony and well even the Samsung. You should get both a better image and better motion playback (well motion playback should be better than the LCD, but about on part with the Sony). But yet again, it may or may not be hugely noticeable for you.
And also environment plays into it as well. The room in which you put the TV may help or hurt your ability to see any advantages a new Plasma might offer. And that’s hard to judge off an Internet description, unless maybe you work for one of those high end home theatre specialist companies (but I’ve not seen any regular contributor here claim to be such).
TVs are going to improve every single year. So if you get a new one today, next spring a better one is going to come out, or perhaps the spring after that. Instead of worrying about getting a big change or not with a new TV, just decide if you’re happy with your current one. When you watch the image, do feel like you’re getting a good entertainment value from it? Do you feel like the image is really crisp and enjoyable to watch? If yes, keep it. If no, then consider a new set. If you’re happy with it right now, I’d ride it out for a few years at least and then re-examine the market and see about buying something else.
In 5 years we’ll possibly have a noticeable presence of 3D TVs, maybe affordable OLED, maybe Laser HDTV. Those models could all end up as high end solutions and help push down the prices of things like LED LCD or Plasma. So if you’re happy with your current image quality, you could wait and then save a bunch of cash on what will be even better sets than you would get right now.
I think you’re better off just staying pat for the time being unless you truly feel like you’re experiencing image problems with your current TVs.
