On the XBox 360 is the HDMI vs HD AV component difference notable?

I have a 360 with the HD AV cables. The red, white, green, blue, and red cables. If I had a 360 with a HDMI port and used a HDMI cable would the difference in graphics be noticable? Is it worth it? And also would I be better suited to buy a top of the line HDMI cable from a store like Best Buy then to use the one that comes with the XBox 360?

What is the picture quality with the HD AV cables vs HDMI? What I mean is are the HD AV cables 720p and the HDMI cable 1080i? I have a 1080p TV so was wondering what the difference is in projection on the TV between the two cables?

  1. Hacked Off says:

If you used HDMI (which is a digital signal) you will not notice any noticable difference on your HDTV. Any differences may be attributed to the way your HDTV has setup the default contrast/brightness levels etc. for component RGB against the defaults for HDMI.

If you have them calibrated side by side, HDMI may give a slightly better picture but much of that will be suggestive as there are not any real noticably differences and certainly not work buying a new Xbox 360 for!

The HDMI converter for 1080i is not work the hassle, there are newer 1080p ones out, but again they are no better than your component signal.

Some HDTVs will only display 1080p through HDMI. This is the only reason why you may want HDMI, check your TV manual.

If your TV supports 720p then personally I would stick with 720p on component if you cannot use 1080p, that is because most of the games are native in 720p resolution (except Virtual Tennis 3 which is in 1080p, do you have this game and love it that much)? It is the Xbox 360′s scaler that scales up the resolution to 1080p or whatever higher resolution your HDTV handles from the game’s native resolution.

Look at a 720p picture on your console and compare it to a 1080i. See if you can notice any difference!
