New to the high def game and looking for advise. I am looking to update DVD player and add surround sound.?

Here is what I have:
I just purchsed a sony kdf-42E2000 rear projection tv.
I have a 7 year old Daewoo DVD player (has only rca jacks).
I just got verizon’s FIOS tv service.
No additional audio or video equipment.

1) I have limited funds to spend (wife ok’d tv, which was under $1000 at the time, and it is a tug of war for anything else)
2) I live in an apartment (it’s quiet and my wife doesn’t want me to blast out the neighbors)

Here are my questions:

a) Verizon box is connected with component cables, should I use hdmi?
b) Will upconverting help me? tv has 720p and 1080i. How much upconversion can the tv handle1080i or 1080p?

c) A nice surround sound system, with dvd player (upconverted?) that sounds good and won’t be too loud for the neighbors.

Stick with the component cables, there isn’t mch difference in quality between them and hdmi.

With the tv, stick with 720p or 1080i, but see what looks best to you.

For speakers, I hate to say it but try Bose, if your on a budget.

you can buy a cheap 5.1 (5 speakers/1 sub) surround system for 200$, it won’t be the best but it will work. If you can make sure it has at least 2 sets of componet imputs, and 2 optical imputs as well. You might check ebay, personally Im a fan of Infinity speakers. As far as sound goes, in order to get digital sound you need to connect the surround sound and the dvd/tv together with either a optical cable or a coaxial cable. As far as video you need to have component cables (red/green/blue) to get 1080p or any other high def signal. As for Dvd make sure it’s progressive scan, which you should be able to get cheap, remember the best video connection is going to be component (r/g/b) and the best sound is going to be optical cable. And if you want to spring for the Hdmi cable, I say go for it, its a great connection.

You’ve bought enough! Now connect it right!

connect the digital audio! and the hdmi (without audio) to the tv.

the set does 720 native, so anything 1080 would be interpolated.

You should get great sony audio thru the digital audio cable, hopefully the FIOS box supports it.

The DVD player is way too old, it will not show off the quality of the set. But, DVD only has 480 lines, so NO DVD player will rock your world, save for a BluRay player.

JakeCigar’s answer is correct. I personally don’t like Sony but thats ok. As for your DVD player look into a Philips DVP3960. Its only $45. Then start saving for a blue ray and if you have a HDMI port then use it. It will save on many tangled cables.
Last to save your neighbors sanity get Bass Shakers.

You can even use a car amp to power them. Very cheep look on eBay.

Ok i had to look up the specs on your tv. I see you have a nice tv your tv goes up to 1080i however 720p is better because it is P for Progressive I is for Innerlaced P is better but the tv you have don’t support 1080p and i would not worry about that to much only if you get a 60in or higher or if you have a ps3 with blu-ray you don’t need that now anyway broadcast only gives you a sinal of 720p and 1080i not anytime soon you get a signal of 1080p. However you have older equipment however your dvd player does not have component or HDMI so you will not be getting HD with your dvd player you need to use s-video or RCA S-video is better. You have cable box i don’t know what cable box you have but if it has RED, GREEN, BLUE or HDMI use that for HD but if you only have RCA or S video use S- video but there is no HD components that you have. Your audio reciver is fine for what you have now. If you are looking to upgrade your reciver or dvd player Get

    Circuit city

    ONKYO reciver
    TX-SR304
    $199.99

    Zenith DVD Player
    DVB712
    $49.99

Really good price for these two components and then you get HD with that dvd player Good Luck.
