In the market for a rear projection tv. 50″ to 60″. I like the SONY but am impressed by Samsung. Thoughts?

Also wondering what people think of 720p vs. 1080p. Is the extra cost worth it?

I hate rear projection TV’s. The DLP’s are better but I still hate the lack of viewing angle and the dark picture. 720p can actually look better than 1080p. It depends on what you are watching. 1080p is not good for fast motion like sports. But I would still recommend getting a 1080p so you have the choice on which resolution to view.

My cousin has a Samsung great TV well worth the extra money I want to get a Samsung plasma but I have no money right now

Sony has made rock-solid electronics for years (IMO) and Samsung, while also a long time manufacturer, has been working toward higher end equipment as well. Personally, I don’t think I would not like the idea of this monstrous console dominating the A / V area of my house. Do the projection sets still have the frontal viewing area or are they more room friendly now? I couldn’t see getting such a large set unless there were only a few viewers that could get into the “sweet spot” of these devices. If you plan on having many people over and watch movies, sports, etc., there would be some sort of “contestation” going on for couch rights. Is the cost comparable to a large wide screen LCD/plasma? These seem to have more viewing angles than those projection units.
I may be mistaken, but the 1080 format is going to be an industry standard for television programming someday soon. I would hate to make the last payment on a lower resolution model and find out that my newly paid for T.V. is technically obsolete.

Always buy the latest technology you can afford. ALL electronics will become obsolete in some point in time, all we can do is make sure obsolescence doesn’t hit us in the face sooner than we want to. 1080p (‘p’ stands for Progressive Scan) is the latest introduction to the consumer electronics world in regards to digital TV resolution. The other formats 480i (‘i’ stands for Interlaced), 480p, 720p, 1080i has been around for many years.
