I bought an RCA 51″ 3 years ago for around 1,000. Still runs great.
Don’t,
They are very critical in alignment.
Time, temperature and their weight all play havoc in the alignment.
WE BOUGHT A 56 INCH RCA AMONTH AGO AT SAM’S CLUB. IT IS HD. BEAUTIFUL HD .IT WAS ON SALE 995.00. GREAT BUY WE THINK.
Check out the DLP’s they all use the same chip from Ti. Samsung Mitsubishi and Toshiba make some beautiful sets. The really new and expensive Samsungs have gotten rid of the color wheel and lamp. This is brand new and I have gotten a lot of requests. However I never buy technology the first time it comes out so I don’t recommend them. DLP has been around for a while and besides replacing a lamp every now and then the TVs really look amazing. The color wheels spin at over 10000 rpm so the rainbow effect is pretty much gone. If you plan on going big (55″ or larger) go with a 1080p DLP or the SXRD from Sony. I really like the new Sony design but that is up to you if someone put a 60″ Sony and a 60″ samsung side by side you would probably pick based on aesthetics
Hitachi is typically rated at the top of the consumer charts. The units mentioned in the other answers are nice too.
Recommendation: Pick a budget ($900 – $1,800). Get the DVD player you will hook up to it, and a movie like Finding Nemo or something else with amazing and diverse visual effects (take an action movie too with dark scenes and rapid motion sequences – car chase, etc).
Go to a place that sells the TVs, and ask if you can hook up your DVD player (I highly recommend a unit that upconverts via HDMI, and a TV that has HDMI interface). Play the same scenes from your movies on all the TVs using the same DVD player. Which one looked the best to YOU? There’s your new TV.
If the salesman gives you crap about your DVD player, use a similar floor model from the store (a decent place will let you do this). Remember, it is about what you like, not what other people like (although you do have to consider quality – you don’t want to pay for repairs on these sets, it costs more than the set sometimes).
