How do i make my hd cable box 1080p if it does not have an hdmi output?

My tv is a 60″ 1080p projection tv. There are only 2 inputs that allow 1080p but the are hdmi inputs, all the others only go to 1080i. The problem is my cable box does not have an hdmi output. It does have a DVI output. If i use and hdmi to dvi cable will that give me 1080p picture quality? does that give the audio too? And will using the converter make the picture quality go down? please explain in detail i really want to know this. Thanks!

DVI does support 1080p. The HDMI to DVI cable will work fine. The real question here is why do you need it? I have never seen a cable or satellite provider that offers 1080p programming. Even over the air (via antenna) only gives you 1080i or 720p. DVI is a video only format so you will also need to use some form of audio cable. Does your cable box also offer Component outputs (Red/Green/Blue RCA jacks)? This will also give you 1080i or 720p. As far as I know, the only 1080p sources readily available are Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) discs. Keep in mind that if you live in an urban area, the best way to get top-quality HD (on networks anyway) is via an ordinary antenna. Satellite and cable companies generally compress the signals they use to allow more channels using less bandwidth. This isn’t true for over-the-air transmissions. Given the choice between 1080i and 720p, most people prefer 720p. The progressive nature of the signal is generally easier on the eyes. With your 60″ TV, either one will look fantastic.

If your cable box does not have HDMI it is unlikely to output 1080p. Are you sure your cable actually provides a 1080p picture? No television-originated material is transmitted in 1080p–it is either 1080i or 720p. Some cable and satellite services are experimenting with 1080p for film-derived materials, but that is transmitted in 1080/24p (24 frames per second to match the film frame rate). Many new TVs allow a 24 fps input and can receive that signal, but on HDMI only. Contact your cable company to find out if they are doing any 1080/24p transmissions, and if so, how do you get them.
