Help Buying A TV Please????
I just bought a PS3 and my 10 year old 19inch Toshiba just isn’t cutting it. So I have about $850 to spend on a new one…
Problem is I don’t know what any of these new terms mean. What’s 1080p? or is it 1080i? Are there lower levels like 780 or something and what’s the difference? What does this mean?
HDTV is obvious right (I think). But what’s with LCD or Plasma? Or projection? What’s the difference?
And what about brands. I’m going to buy brand name so is there a brand that will work better with my PS3? What brand has the best sound quality?
It’s obvious that I don’t know anything about TVs these days so any advice will be much appreciated!

Will I need a receiver box or special cables or anything like that or just plug in my cable and play? What’s an HDMI cable?

the numbers 480 720 1080 refer to the resolution of the tv and i means interlaced the picture is being created on two passes. P is progressive the entire picture is created on a single pass. Plasma is bad for gaming as they have burn in problems. I strongly recommend going for a LCD and samsung and sharp make the best. PS3 supports 1080p so I would get at least a 32″ 1080p tv…However, at your price range you will not get into that tv…so Id take a small compromise and get a 720p samsung or sharp lcd. at this smaller screen size the difference between 720p and 1080p will not really be noticeable. You want to make sure the tv has a fast response time as that is very important – try for around 5 – 8 ms
Brad said most of it. HDMI is a digital cable that would hook up your ps3 to your new tv with a single cable for both video and audio. Plus since it is a digital signal this will provide the best quality picture and sound.
As for Vizio, Target carries them.
720p would be the resolution that I’d recommend as well, especially if you get a tv smaller than 40″. You won’t notice the difference between the 720p vs. 1080p. By the way, if given a display option between 1080i and 720p, I would always recommend 720p as the display option.
For PS3 you need a 1080p screen with 120Hz refresh rate and HDMI Inputs for the blu-ray technology in your PS3.
Stay away from cheap brands that you have not heard of before.
