Do I need an HDMI receiver?
I have a Sony up-convert to full 1080p dvd player with HDMI. A Panasonic 56″ full 1080p rear projection tv with HDMI and I have an HDMI connector going from the dvd player to the tv. My question is do I need an HDMI receiver to go along with the other two? I have surround sound to go along with everything but the receiver I am using now is about 5 years old and does not have an HDMI input. o I need a new one? Thanks in advance for the help.

It’s handy to have a receiver with HDMI so it does all the video and audio switching, but it’s not required.
You just need to run an optical or coaxial-digital cable from the DVD player to the receiver and turn it on when watching movies.
As long as your current receiver can decode dolby digital signals or dolby digital dts you should be fine with your current set up.
No. I have the same issue; the receiver does not support HDMI. I run all HDMI video to the display and for audio an optical cable from each component (DVD, SatTV etc), to the receiver for my surround. Works well, but you have to deal with good cable management runs to the TV.
The idea with an HDMI-capable receiver is if you had a handful of devices which utilized the HDMI connection but only had one HDMI jack on your HDTV. You could funnel all your component’s HDMI cables into the receiver first, then run one HDMI cable to your TV set. This is true for ALL video cables.
