Can I somehow “hack” my 1080i HDTV to force it to accept a 1080p signal?

I have a 60″ Sony WEGA rear projection HDTV. It only accepts 1080i and it irritates me. Its 1080p counterpart cost twice as much and thats its only difference. I know there is someway to open it, remove some parts, and install others so it accepts the 1080p signal. I feel so behind in technology even though this tv is new.

You cannot, the 1080 interlaced screen will not support the 1080 progressive signal. The is too many differences in the configuration. Thats the way it is with LCD and Plasma.

Not with what you have. You need the 1080p RF input tuner to do that.

relax. you’re not missing anything. No one broadcasts in 1080p, and there are no true NATIVE 1080p encoded movies available..yet. This format has a couple of years to go.

You discovered the trick of jacking up the price for 1080p, now dont fall for it!

That is like changing an old 1980s (480i)TV to get to get the new SD (480p) from my DVD in progressive scan. It’s not possible.

Siberia is right, don’t fall for 1080p. Nothing is broadcast in 1080p, and it will be a long time, if ever, before they do broadcast things in that format. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will use it, but as he said there are no movies out that use it yet. Plus, the advantage over 1080i is not big enough to warrant the added cost. Plus, there really wouldn’t be any easy “switch a few parts” solution, it would likely cost you a lot of money.
